Rodents
Rats
Pest significance - Spread diseases to humans and livestock. Consumption and contamination of food stuffs & damage to building structures.
Pest activity - Sightings, smell, noise, droppings, smears, damaged goods/building fabrication.
Habitat - Commensal rodents, live in close proximity to people. Needs a water source.
Identification - Fur brown to black paler grey underbelly. Head & body 150-300mm. Tail 140-230mm.
Mice
Pest significance - Spread diseases to humans and livestock. Consumption and contamination of food stuffs & damage to building structures.
Pest activity - Sightings, smell, noise, droppings, smears, damaged goods/building fabrication.
Habitat - Found in urban and rural environments, houses, shops, warehouses etc.
Identification - Uniform greyish brown, lighter underbelly. Head & body 70-110mm. Tail 50-110mm.
Grey Squirrels
Pest significance - Damages buildings, gnawing on wooden beams and stripping of electrical insulation from wire. Disease and contamination of water tanks.
Pest activity - Noise, visual sightings, droppings, stripped spruce cones, gnawed hazelnuts.
Habitat - Deciduous woods, hedgerows, parks and gardens.
Identification - Coat is grey, limbs tinged with brown. Head & body 240-300mm. Tail 195-240mm.
Crawling Insects
Cockroaches (various)
Pest significance - Can cause contamination and can carry diseases such as Salmonella.
Pest activity - Marks, Faecal pellets, egg cases, sightings, Smell.
Habitat - Kitchens, Drains, Basements, Rubbish tips, Pipe ducts, Risers.
Identification - Brown to reddish colour, winged. Adults vary from 10-45mm in length between species.
Fleas
Pest significance - External parasites of animals and man. Bites around ankles and midriff.
Pest activity - Crawling in the fur of pets or hopping around the room, larvae found in pets bedding or regular sleeping areas, pets scratching, bite marks.
Habitat - Predominantly where the host species are found. Indoors and outdoors.
Identification - Adults 2-3mm in length.
Bedbugs
Pest significance - Adults and nymphs are external parasites of man.
Pest activity - Generally hidden during the day, can be found crawling on various surfaces hidden within the room. bites, dark excreta marks found on bedroom furniture, blood spots, smell.
Habitat - Found in cracks and crevices usually close to the host, including behind headboards, wall paper, light switches, under carpets and more.
Identification - Adults 4-5mm in length.
Ants (Various)
Pest significance - Can contaminate food sources and can cause cross contamination from infected to clean areas. Can be a nuisance in residential or commercial premises.
Pest activity - Trails of foraging worker ants, visible nests, aeration towers.
Habitat - In and around residential and commercial premises, manufacturing sites, trees.
Identification - Adults vary from 1-6mm between species.
Silverfish
Pest significance - A minor pest of kitchens, libraries and commercial premises.
Pest activity - Potential damage to books and cotton/linen fabrics. Live sightings or dead insects.
Habitat - Live within cracks and crevices preferring warm moist conditions.
Identification - Adult 12mm in length, silver grey, torpedo shapes.
Varied Carpet Beetle
Pest significance - Common species often considered a pest of domestic households and natural history museums.
Pest activity - Damage to natural fibers, carpets, furniture, clothing and insect collections.
Habitat - Human environments, birds nests, tree hollows and similar.
Identification - Adults 3mm in length, oval, pattern of white black and yellow scales. Larvae 4-5mm in length, small brown and hairy.
Stored Product Insects
Pest significance - Large number of species, some live on specific foods whereas most are capable of living on a wide variety of foods.
Pest activity - Can cause damage to food stuffs, loss of quality, contamination, cross infestation and loss of production.
Habitat - Cereals, pulses, dried fruits, spices, oil seeds and many more.
